Teaching POint of View
Two Different Perspectives for the Same Event or Topic
Being egocentric is part of a child's developmental stages. It's great though, of course, to encourage kids to be empathetic and to learn to see things from another person's viewpoint. In this fun activity, you can discuss an event like a sleepover with your students. First, how is a sleepover viewed from a child's standpoint? (popcorn, video games, staying up late, fun, laughing, chatting...) Then contrast this with how a parent might view it. (tired kids the next day, loud talking so it's hard to sleep, kids running around in the house and making a mess...) Totally different for sure!
Loud class versus teacher trying to teach.
Once we discuss this idea of different perspectives for the same event, I like to put my kids in groups of two and have them make a simple two column sheet of paper (or small poster/chart). Then I give the kids a topic (like an expensive toy for sale, eating fast food, having a big birthday party at the house...), or let them come up with a topic themselves. Kids make a bulleted list for how one person might feel vs. another person.
